1. Start with Basic Shapes: Every object can be broken down into basic shapes like circles, squares, triangles, etc. Start your sketch by lightly drawing these shapes to form a rough outline of your subject.

2. Add Details: Once you have your basic shapes, start adding more detail. For landscapes, this might mean sketching in trees, mountains, or buildings. For caricatures, it could mean exaggerating certain features of the person's face.

3. Use Reference Images: If you're new to sketching, using a reference image can be very helpful. This could be a photo, another piece of artwork, or even a live model.

4. Practice Shading: Shading can give your sketches a sense of depth and realism. Practice different shading techniques like hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling.

5. Experiment with Line Weight: Varying the thickness and darkness of your lines can make your sketches more interesting and dynamic. Try using a softer pencil for lighter lines and a harder pencil for darker lines.

6. Be Patient: Sketching is a skill that takes time to develop. Don't get discouraged if your first few sketches don't turn out as you'd hoped. Keep practicing and you'll improve.

7. Capture Proportions: Whether you are drawing a caricature or a landscape, getting the proportions right is crucial. For a caricature, exaggeration is key, but remember to maintain the essence of the character. For landscapes, focus on the scale and perspective.

8. Use Quality Materials: Invest in high-quality sketching pencils, paper, and erasers. The right tools can make a big difference in your sketches.

9. Learn from Others: Look at the work of other artists to get ideas and inspiration. You can learn a lot from studying their techniques.

10. Take a Class or Workshop: If you're serious about improving your sketching skills, consider taking a drawing class or workshop. You can learn valuable techniques and get feedback on your work.

11. Practice Often: Like any skill, the more you practice sketching, the better you'll get. Try to sketch every day, even if it's just for a few minutes.

12. Enjoy the Process: Most importantly, have fun! Sketching should be an enjoyable activity, not a chore. Relax and take pleasure in the creative process.
